Our History
- For over 22 years, McKeesport Preservation Societyhas stood as a steadfast guardian of our city's history and heritage. Despite facing ongoing opposition from the City Government's misguided policies, we have remained resolute in our mission to preserve the architectural treasures that reflect the glory of our industrial past. Amidst a challenging environment where hundreds of historic structures fell victim to demolition, our non-profit has stood firm, driven by the belief that the soul of our city lies in its historical legacy. We've seen crime rates rise despite the mistaken notion that demolishing vacant houses would alleviate economic distress. Instead, our passion for preservation has only grown stronger, fueled by the determination to protect our cultural identity and restore our community's pride. Our journey has been marked by some remarkable victories that showcase the impact of our efforts. As part of our educational initiatives, we proudly sponsored and facilitated the erection of two State Historic Markers. One of these markers stands proudly in front of a significant National historic building, commemorating a pivotal moment in the lives of two American Presidents. Through these markers and our education campaigns, we have played a pivotal role in safeguarding this iconic building from destruction, preserving its legacy for future generations. Now, our focus turns to an extraordinary architectural gem—the 1890s Queen Anne home. As the crowning jewel of Millionaire's Row, it embodies the pinnacle of our city's industrial past and cultural heritage. This grand structure represents not only our history but also our vision for the future. Restoring the Queen Anne is not just about renovating bricks and mortar; it's about igniting an era of economic growth and shared cultural assets for every resident in the city.
